When Grandpa died, Grandma gave the cousins $10,000; I used mine to buy a California Rambler 2 miles away. By this time I was teaching children's church, working with Pioneer Girls, and attending Bible study under Marilyn Reid who--despite the fundamentalist teachings of our church--remained thoughtful and thought provoking. She tempered the wind with intelligence, clarity, logic, and Christian spirit. I was very aware that she kept me from losing what little edge I had on happiness.

I kept smiling. But not very well.
