Bolstered by the acceptance I experienced in Tempe, I approached college with confidence. I was elected homecoming attendant and class vice president, and asked to be the yearbook artist. Happily I threw myself into my studies. For the first time since moving to the States, I was glad to be in school.
I was aware, though, that I was a disappointment to my roommate. Cyndee was a brazen and happy girl who knew how to live. I found it difficult to enter many of her exploits--though I certainly envied her. I instead tried to keep myself "safe" by surrounding myself with the "dedicated Christian" crowd. Mostly this was Jack, Debbie, Linda, Mike, and Cliff--a musical group led by the effervescent Cliff, whose energy we all enjoyed,
Somehow, though, it did not keep me safe.
